I discovered Jennifer Thomas when I got back into writing and I have to say, this was the most anticipated album release on October 2018, and my top favorite. The cover is goregous and The Fire Within is does not disappoint and should be added to your #writingtothemusic playlist.

THE FIRE WITHIN kicks off this new bold, blazoned feeling setting up nothing but greatness for the entire album. At that 20 second mark, “I’m en fuego” feeling hits. Her piano and pianissmos and decrescendos are perfect afterward that mark. Telling a soft spoken story as if we’ve reach the center of this journey.  The piece features The Rogue Pianist on the song. I’m really hoping to hear more from her. Please lend your support for her new album She’s no Beethoven. 

AWAKENING  is one of my favorites. The title, pace, and the story just makes it epic. At 1:22, you hear the violins come in and play off each other. It’s gorgeous! I get wrapped up in each time. It mimics the feeling of Chapter 2 the cry and discovery and the the violin slur at 3:01 is just *sighs* perfect. The piece tops out just a little over five minutes, and it’s so worth it! I will listen to this over and over again when writing those intricate scenes and encounters or self discoveries.

ASCENSION another piece brilliantly composed. The 30 second intro has me anticipating what to come and wonder “What will I hear next?” vibe. Thomas does not disappoint when I hear that violin coming onto the scene at 1:28 gracing those high notes against the piano with a strong sense of, “I need to be heard enough is enough!” The entire piece just wonderful to where I’m just enjoying every moment of it. I love the style, the story! It has to be my favorite piece of the entire album.

BECAUSE OF YOU the softer flame to this album. The inner flame if you will. The intro notes are light hearted and soft like an ember. Soothing piece that each time it comes up I have really look at the title and say, “Nice.”

The calmness lasts until 1:30 into the piece before its crescendo and picks up. Which what happens to flames when you toss that extra long into the flame. It’s soothing, comforting, and your guard is dropped when confessing to the one you love. You are exposed and heart on the line hoping they feel the same and you do, you hear the music at 3:21 take off. I love this piece.

BELIEVER cover is so amazingly different and I love the song more than it’s original verison. It’s got the pep and conviction. She really outdid her self when composing this cover. Her covers of songs always out pace the original in my strong opinion.

TIME is aptly named. It shows Thomas‘ talent on the piano. The runs and the slurs how quickly can she travel from one end to the other in seconds flat is beyond amazing. I would say it might be the most under appreciated piece on the album screaming full of complicated chords and music theory.
